About the games

What are the Military World Games?

The Military World Games are an international multisport competition for military athletes from around the world. The games are organized by the International Military Sports Council, known as CISM, and bring together active-duty service members representing more than 100 nations in the spirit of friendly competition and international cooperation. The 2027 games will be the first Military World Games hosted in the United States.

Who is in charge of the games?

CISM owns and governs the Military World Games. The 2027 games are being planned and delivered by the 2027 Military World Games Local Organizing Committee in coordination with CISM, federal, state and local government partners, the U.S. military and designated host venues.

Why is UNC Charlotte serving as a venue for the games?

The games require significant athletic, housing and operational infrastructure. The 2027 Military World Games Local Organizing Committee identified UNC Charlotte as a venue that could meet those requirements.

When will the games take place?

The games will take place at sites throughout North and South Carolina, including UNC Charlotte, from June 25 through July 4, 2027.

When will UNC Charlotte begin adjusting campus operations?

Current planning anticipates altered campus operations from June 21 through July 5, 2027.

Campus Access and Security

Who will be allowed on campus during the games?

Current planning anticipates that campus access will be limited to mandatory employees with specific games-related responsibilities, ticket holders, games personnel and other pre-approved individuals. Approved service providers and a limited number of students who need to remain in campus housing also will be permitted on campus.

Will faculty, staff and students need special credentials to access campus?

Individuals who are approved to access campus during the games will need special credentials, but the details of that process are still being determined.

Will any buildings remain open for regular operations?

The entire campus is expected to be limited to game-related activities. All campus entrances are expected to be closed, with access provided by security personnel who will verify credentials.

What security screenings should employees and students expect?

More information about security screening procedures will be shared closer to the games.

What should employees do if they need materials or equipment from campus?

Employees should plan ahead and obtain all necessary work materials and equipment before the restricted period begins. Employees are not expected to have access to campus buildings until after July 5, 2027.

In an emergency, employees should contact their divisional leader, dean or the appropriate designee for guidance.

Will tickets be required to attend the games?

Yes. Tickets will be required. Ticket prices, the ticket vendor and information will be announced later by the Military World Games.

Employee work expectations

Which employees will be considered mandatory personnel?

Employees with specific responsibilities for supporting the operation of the games will be considered mandatory. The University is working with affected campus units to identify those employees.

What should non-mandatory employees expect?

Nonmandatory employees will be offered remote work at a minimum. Human Resources is working to determine alternative arrangements for employees who are unable to work remotely.

Will the University enter a condition change during the games?

Based on the anticipated security requirements, the university is expected to enter a condition change. The final decision will be made closer to the games and communicated to faculty, staff and students.

How will vacation requests around July 4 be handled?

Vacation requests for nonmandatory employees will be handled as usual. Mandatory employees should work with their supervisors regarding requests for time off or alternative arrangements.

Will employees receive additional compensation if they are required to work during restricted operations?

Employees will receive additional compensation only if they work overtime and are eligible for overtime pay or if they work on a holiday.

Will temporary work spaces be provided for employees who cannot access their offices?

Because most employees are expected to be able to work remotely, the University is not currently planning to provide temporary work spaces.

Academic and research operations

How has the summer academic calendar been adjusted?

The academic calendar has been adjusted and published to accommodate the space needed for the games. Faculty, staff and students should consult the Academic Calendar for the most current information.

Will faculty have access to offices and research spaces?

Faculty will not be permitted to access campus unless they are on an approved list of personnel who must access a specific research space, such as the vivarium.

Will research activity need to pause?

Yes. During the designated games period, research that requires access to campus spaces will need to pause. Research conducted online or at other facilities may continue as usual.

How should faculty address grant-funded research obligations?

Faculty should begin working with their department heads and deans to discuss alternative plans for grant-funded research.

What should researchers do about work that requires daily monitoring?

Researchers with work that requires daily monitoring should communicate their specific needs to their department heads or deans. Departments should consult their continuity plans for guidance on managing research during a campus disruption.

Will animal research facilities remain operational?

Animal research facilities will operate and be accessible as needed. Only pre-approved employees will have access to those facilities. Departments should consult their continuity plans for guidance.

How will hazardous materials and compliance requirements be handled?

Student housing and services

Will students be allowed on campus during the games?

Campus access will be limited to personnel working on campus during the games and individuals who purchase tickets to attend the games. Special provisions will be made for a limited number of students who need to remain in campus housing.

What residence halls will be affected by the games?

Current planning anticipates that most residence halls will be needed for use by the games. Exceptions identified for use by students who must remain on campus will be shared later. Additional sites in North and South Carolina also will house athletes and games personnel.

When will students need to leave residence halls?

Residence halls will remain open until the typical move-out date at the end of the spring 2027 semester.

Will housing be available for students with extenuating circumstances?

Limited housing will be available for students with extenuating circumstances. Campus services will be extremely limited during the games.

When will summer housing assignments and move-out timelines be announced?

Housing and Residence Life will communicate summer housing assignments and move-out timelines in spring 2027.

Which student services will remain available?

Online student services will remain operational throughout the games. In-person services will be limited. The campus library, Student Health Center and recreational facilities will close at the end of Summer Session I and reopen for Summer Session II. The counseling emergency number will remain available 24/7. Additional information about available services will be announced later.

Will dining services remain available?

Dining services will be limited primarily to supporting the operation of the games between the end of Summer Session I and the start of Summer Session II. More information about the retail options that will remain available will be announced later.

Parking, traffic and transportation

Will there be changes in parking, traffic flow and transportation on campus during the games?

Yes, substantial changes are expected to campus parking, traffic flow and transportation during the games, but exact details are still being determined. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
